Stunt of the Week: The egg that cracked the internet

Kylie Jenner, the unrivalled “Queen of Instagram”, has met her match! Until earlier this year Kylie Jenner held the record for the most liked post on the social media site Instagram. The reality show star, with over 123 million followers, has had very little competition over the years when it comes to social media engagement.

On 4th January 2019, a viral sensation cracked the internet.

The viral sensation (nope not a monkey riding a pig or a bulldog skateboarding) was, in fact, an egg!

No yolk, an egg!

The ordinary brown egg surpassed a photo of Kylie Jenner’s daughter, Stormi which received 18 million likes, with a whopping 52+ million likes. This means that it only took the photo 10 days to beat the record! Chris Godfrey, a 29-year-old advertising creative, is the man behind the egg. In an interview asking why the egg was his chosen subject, he responded:

“An egg has no gender, race or religion. An egg is an egg, it’s universal.”

But there is more to the story than meets the eye. The single brown egg named Eugene has been adopted to campaign for mental health. The egg’s Instagram account @world_record_egg features a range of videos showing viewers how going viral has affected its mental health.

Within the videos, the egg talks about how “the pressure of social media is getting to me,” and calls to action that “if you’re struggling, too, talk to someone” and links viewers to a mental health site – making it very hard to egg-nore.

Whilst the internet works in mysterious ways, this little egg has been put to a noble cause and used its fame for good. Isn’t that what social media is all about?

Now that’s a good egg if you ask me!
